community what is community

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Lawrence Cannon sent a letter to Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis extending his sombre recognition of the 20th anniversary of January 13 and stressing that Canadians remembered those Lithuanians who fell in defence of their nation’s freedom.

“The bravery of ordinary Lithuanians twenty years ago, acting in non-violent defence of their freedom, was an inspiration to the entire international community,” the letter of 13 January reads.
According to L.Cannon, Canada had never recognized the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States and established diplomatic relations with newly independent Lithuania in 1991.

“Since that time, Canada-Lithuania relations, propelled by the shared commitment to the values of democracy, international security, human rights and the rule of law, have grown and strengthened,” the letter reads.

According to the Canadian Foreign Minister, the tragic events of 13 January 1991 were a direct antecedent to Lithuania’s re-emergence on the world stage.
