On 17 February, at the meeting with U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Vice President for Europe and Eurasia Peter Rashish in Washington D.C., Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis stressed that Lithuania was interested in strengthening its economic relations with the United States.
According to the Minister, Lithuania expects a successful cooperation in attracting the U.S. investment and technology to the Visaginas nuclear power plant and projects of liquefied natural gas terminal.

“The U.S. is the main EU trade partner, while economic relations between Lithuanian and the U.S.A. are not as intensive, as they could be. The Visaginas nuclear power plant and liquefied natural gas terminal projects could be a good opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation,” head of the Lithuanian diplomacy said.

At the meeting, the interlocutors also discussed the immediate steps to strengthen cooperation: the establishment of an office of the public agency “Invest Lithuania” in the U.S. Silicon Valley and the U.S. trade mission to Lithuania in June.

Minister A.Ažubalis acquainted P.Rashish with the business environment in Lithuania: the country’s situation in the region, investments, labour force, infrastructure and logistics. The Minister underlined that Lithuania could become a gateway to the market of the Nordic and Baltic region with the population of 33 million. According to the Minister, not less important are the Internet penetration rates in Lithuania, which are among the highest in Europe.

In May 2010, a business delegation led by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis took part in the US-Baltic Foundation annual event in Washington, D.C.
