community what is community

Lithuanian history shows that the country has always belonged to the community of European countries, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Egidijus Meilūnas said during the opening ceremony of the Europe Day celebration on 6 May in Vilnius.

“We belong to this community naturally.  I am glad that after a long break we have successfully returned to it as a full-fledged member, and the European values, culture, traditions and identity came back to Lithuania. Therefore, the motto of this celebration – ‘we are part of Europe’ – is meaningful and symbolic,” Vice-Minister said.
According to the Vice-Minister, even today, after seven years of the EU membership, people still say that Lithuania is an EU newcomer, but since ancient times Lithuanians have contributed to the European history.

“Just a few days ago we celebrated the 220th anniversary of the Constitution of May 3, the first European constitution, and more than 400 years ago our ancestors founded the first multiethnic union of countries – the Republic of Two Nations. We also have to remember Lithuania during the interwar period, when our country had harmoniously joined the family of European nations. This is a significant contribution of Lithuania and other peoples to the history of Europe. And we can be rightly proud of it,” Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas said.

The opening ceremony of the Europe Day celebration in Vincas Kudirka Square was also attended by Deputy Mayor of Vilnius Romas Adomavičius, Member of the European Parliament Laima Liucija Andrikienė and foreign ambassadors.

On 6-8 May, the Europe Day events will take place in Vilnius on this weekend.
