This week, the issue of holding a referendum on the dual citizenship introduction has come to the Lithuanian Parliament’s deputies, seeing that the Lithuanian Human Rights Committee plans to include it on the Parliamentary agenda, informs the information agency Regnum.

At the same time, Lithuania’s Central Election Commission has received a request to estimate the costs that would arise from holding referendum alongside the parliamentary elections in 2012.

It should be noted that deputies had concerns as to whether enough people would participate in the referendum. For instance, the referendum proposal on the extension of Ignalina nuclear power plant was supported by 91.4% of the voters. The referendum similarly took place together with parliamentary elections. However, since only 48.43% of the residents participated in the elections, the referendum was declared void.

Arminas Lidaka, chairman of the Human Rights Committee, believes that voters’ activity could be increased by organizing an online voting.
