On 19 April in Vilnius Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis met with delegation of the U.S. Senators visiting Lithuania and discussed the key directions in strengthening of transatlantic relations, NATO issues, nuclear safety challenges in the region, relations with Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

A. Ažubalis noted that visits of the U.S. Congress representatives to Lithuania became regular. They are an important contribution to the development of bilateral relations,  and demonstrate the United States’ attention to the Baltic and Central European countries. The Minister stressed the importance of the U.S. attention to Europe.

“This year when we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Lithuanian and the United States, I would like to recall the U.S. iron policy of non-recognizing Lithuania’s annexation and support for maintaining the symbol of Lithuanian statehood – the diplomatic mission in Washington,” A. Ažubalis said.

On behalf of the delegation Senator John Kyl thanked Lithuania for its contribution to the support of democratic processes in the region and the promotion of stronger international security.

According to him, the U.S. highly appreciates Lithuania’s contribution to the strengthening of security in Afghanistan.

During their visit to Lithuania the U.S. Senators are also meeting with Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Rasa Juknevičienė, Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė, members of the Seimas. The visit aims at strengthening Lithuanian-American political, economic and human relations.
