RIGA, August 25 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov met with Russians in Riga to hear out their problems and promised to help solve them.

The meeting took place at the cultural and business centre Moscow House in Riga, where Luzhkov is on a one-day visit.

Riga Mayor Nil Ushakov, Russian Ambassador to Latvia Alexander Vishnyakov, members of the Moscow city government delegation and representatives from organisations of Russian compatriots in Latvia attended the meeting.

The sides discussed Moscow’s support for various projects, including financial and medical help to World War II and Afghan war veterans living in Latvia, the development of cooperation in the field of education, both secondary and higher, bigger funding for the “Moscow Mayor Stipend” programme, and the creation of a complex in downtown Riga which would house all organisations of Russian compatriots in Latvia.

“I am very pleased by the meeting and the work with the Russian-speaking community in Latvia,” Luzhkov said. “We solved a number of questions during the meeting and heard new proposals. The meeting showed that the Russian community in Latvia has a potential.”

The Moscow mayor is in Riga on a one-day visit, during which he has met with Riga Duma leaders, Russian compatriots, Metropolitan Alexander of Riga and All Latvia.

Luzhkov also plans to visit the Riga automotive plant AMO PLANT in Jelgava, where the Moscow city government is the major shareholder, and meet with city Mayor Andris Ravins.

During the visit, Moscow city government Minister Leonid Bochin and the Riga Duma’s Housing Committee Head Vyacheslav Stepanenko signed a protocol of cooperation.

Luzhkov last visited Riga in 2004.
